Is DVD+R a plus? What's the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R?
Basically, there are two main formats: "dash" (DVD-R/RW) and "plus" (DVD+R/RW). There's not much difference between them. Both can be used to record and play back data and video. Both formats are available as recordable drives for both computers and home video recorders. In spite of claims that one format is more compatible with players and drives, both formats are similarly compatible. There were speed differences, but it's essentially a marketing game of which company can bring the faster technology to market quickest. One format will come out with faster write speeds, then the other one will match it or surpass it. 16x is the theoretical maximum, so both formats have more or less reached top speed. One key difference is that DVD-R must be pre-formatted, while DVD+R doesn't.
DVD-R was the first DVD recording format released that was compatible with standalone DVD Players. DVD-R is a non-ReWritable format and it is compatible with about 93% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs. Both DVD-R and DVD-RW support single side 4.37 GB DVDs (called DVD-5) and double sided 8.75 GB DVDs (called DVD-10). These formats are supported by DVDForum. DVD+R is a non-ReWritable format and it is compatible with about 89% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs. Both DVD+R and DVD+RW support single side 4.37 GB DVDs (called DVD-5) and double side 8.75 GB DVDs (called DVD-10). These formats are supported by the DVD+RW Alliance. The long and the short of it, from the Geek point of view, is that they're both a dye-based medium with a write-once capability. Everything else is company-based marketing hype. Dig?
Finally, we don't want to forget DVD-R DL, and DVD+R DL, also known as DVD-R9, and DVD+R9 respectively. They are Dual Layer writeable DVDs. The dual layered discs can hold 7.95 GB (called DVD-9) and dual layered double sides hold 15.9 GB (called dvd-18). Confused yet?
